Water: Miracle Cure?
Naz Amini on
One of the easiest ways to keep your body healthy from the inside, out is to drink clean, uncontaminated water every day. Water is such a critical component of our health and physiology that if the body doesn’t get enough of it, on a regular basis, damage can occur to tissues, bones, muscles, and blood vessels and can eventually lead to such chronic diseases as diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis.
Did you know 75% of your brain and 25% of your bones are made up of water? Drinking water is also the most natural and healthy way to lose weight, burn fat, and suppress your appetite. By drinking 8 glasses of water daily, you can assist your liver in burning stored fat as energy and help your kidneys get rid of excess toxins in your body. This is considered the healthiest way of losing weight: you get to keep your lean muscle mass and get rid of the stored fat.
Drinking water at the beginning of a meal also makes you feel full, so it cuts down on appetite and rids your body of excess salt that can cause water retention. Drinking water speeds up your body’s overall metabolism, aids in digestion and absorption of nutrients at the cellular level, and it also removes wastes from the tissues, preventing toxin build-up. If this process does not take place efficiently due to dehydration, chronic nutrient deficiency and constant food cravings occur. Drinking water also provides energy by supplying oxygen to every cell, keeping you energetic and maintaining a proper blood volume in your body.
How Much Water is Necessary?
I recommend drinking half of your body weight in ounces daily. So, if you weight 120 pounds, then drink 60 ounces per day. However, depending on your lifestyle, where you live, and what of your level of physical activity is, you may need to increase the amount of water you consume daily. For example, if you drink alcohol or live in 100 degree temperature or exercise vigorously, you need more water than those who don't drink alcohol or live in cooler climate. Another accurate way to judge if you are drinking enough water is to simply look at the color of your urine. If it's very dark yellow, then that may indicate dehydration and therefore a need to up your water intake. Your urine should be light in color. One more thing, don't wait until you feel thirsty as this is a sign that you are already dehydrated. Drink throughout the day to stay properly hydrated and healthy.
