Tips to Stay Hydrated This Summer
Paula Gallagher on
Staying hydrated is simple enough to do, but many of us just don’t do it. Dehydration, even a mild case, can affect our brain function and energy levels. On average, we lose about half a gallon of water every day through body waste, perspiration, and even breathing. Replacing that loss each day is essential to maintain good health.
Sweating accelerates water loss, so it's extra important to make sure that you're getting enough fluid, especially in the summer. Sometimes water alone may not be enough. In the extreme heat, and during long workouts (think marathons), an electrolyte added to water may help replenish minerals.
Here are some tips to stay hydrated.
1. Eat and drink fluids. Easy enough. Did you know that up to 20% of our daily fluid intake comes from juice-filled fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, lettuce and tomatoes? Caffeinated beverages can speed up dehydration, so if you are a coffee lover, make sure that you drink plenty of water. Most people should aim for 8–10 glasses of water per day.
2. Have it on hand. Always have water with you! Carry a refillable water bottle so that you can replace your daily fluid losses.
3. Space it out. Drink water throughout the day, on an ongoing basis.
4. Make it fun. If you have a hard time drinking water, try flavoring it naturally with cucumber slices, lemon wedges, or pear. Fresh herbs such as mint or lemon balm are also lovely addition.
