Spring Cleaning...Your Body
Paula Gallagher on
Opening windows, seeding your lawn, and putting away winter coats are some of the things most of us do in our homes when the first signs of spring start popping up. But our homes aren’t the only things we should be looking at when it comes to spring cleaning.
A seasonal body cleanse can do wonders for our health. Cleansing or detoxifying can help the body rid itself of toxins that have built up in our systems over the months (or years).
A quality cleanse will enhance the body’s natural detoxification process, which includes the liver, kidneys, digestive system, lymphatics, and blood. If you have never done a cleanse before, the variety of options available today can be confusing and daunting. Here are two that I like.
For first-timers or people with very sensitive systems, I recommend a gentle cleanse like Renew Life First Cleanse. It is a combination of organic herbs that supports normal cleansing and organ detoxification functions and is designed for people who have never taken a total body cleansing supplement. It lasts 2 weeks and is simple and effective.
Pathway Ultra Cleansing System AM/PM offers a little more digestive cleansing action and is a 30-day cleanse. This is the one that I do twice a year.
With both cleanses, there are certain guidelines I suggest:
1. Add a fiber product to your diet. It can be in the form of flax seeds, psyllium husks, oat bran, or whatever you like. But fiber is important to help with the elimination of toxins.
2. Drink at least 8 cups of clean, filtered water per day to help flush out toxins, move the fiber and rehydrate cells and tissues.
3. Talk to your health care practitioner. These cleanses should not be done if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Cleanses should be done with caution if you suffer from a chronic condition such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.
4. To maximize the benefits of a cleanse, avoid alcohol, caffeine, red meat and processed foods, and increase whole grains, legumes and most importantly fruits and vegetables.
Understanding the Side-Effects
How your body responds to a cleanse depends on your individual biochemistry. Many people begin to experience the health benefits of detoxification within a few days to a few weeks. Others take longer to notice results.
During a cleanse you may experience mild headaches, muscle aches, or changes in bowel habits. These symptoms occur as toxins are mobilized and circulate in the blood. Symptoms are usually mild and temporary, so stop the cleanse if side-effects last more than 24 hours, if they intensify, or if you experience symptoms not specified here.
Most detoxification programs are not designed as weight-loss programs, but as the body starts to function at a better level, weight loss can sometimes be a natural side effect.
Most people have no problems maintaining sufficient energy levels to continue with regular daily activities while on a good cleansing program. Some people may choose to curtail more strenuous physical activity during a cleanse.
By safely and effectively cleansing and detoxifying your body, you can reap the benefits of better health, brighter skin, more energy, and weight loss. True health is achieved by cleansing from the inside out!
