How Eczema Changed My Life ... For the Better
I took an interesting path to becoming a nutrition counselor at Village Green Apothecary. My story may help others who are suffering from health problems that conventional doctors are unable to help.
About 7 years ago, I was diagnosed with severe eczema. I had rashes all over my body, from head to toe. I wore long-sleeve shirts to cover my rashes, and people would still ask me if I had burned my hands and how it had happened. Every day I suffered from pain, itchiness, headaches, and severe fatigue. Seeing one dermatologist was not enough to take care of my problem, so I decided to consult another dermatologist in the area. I gave up after seeing 6 different dermatologists, who just prescribed different strengths of cortisone cream. I asked each of those doctors if I could take anything internally to help my painful eczema. I was told there was no such thing and got a look as if I were crazy to ask such a question.
Cortisone cream was helpful at first, but as my eczema got worse, nothing would really help. Cortisone definitely wasn’t the long-term solution. Finally, I took a nutrition class at my local community college. It was a very comprehensive class on the basics of nutrition, healthy eating, exercising, and managing stress. One day after class, I asked my professor if she knew of anything I could do nutritionally to ease my eczema. At first I thought she was going to call me crazy too, but instead she asked me questions about my diet and lifestyle. Then, surprisingly enough, she said the only way I would get better would be to take certain supplements that my body seemed to be deficient in, due to my poor diet.
At that time, I was a full-time student and working full-time, as well. I was eating out almost every day, and dealing with a lot of stress. My professor explained that our bodies do not produce essential fatty acids and the only way to get them is from our diet. Since the Western diet is extremely low in essential fatty acids (good fats), the best approach is to supplement. She also recommended other supportive nutrients, such as zinc and B-complex, to help repair my broken tissues and heal my eczema. As a result, I was referred to Village Green Apothecary as a great resource, not only to buy my supplements, but to get additional advice about my health.
I became a regular customer at Village Green, going to the store at least once a week. I was fascinated by the knowledge of the staff and the world of high quality supplements. I was learning a lot and getting a great deal of attention for my health. I started taking a therapeutic dose of omega 3-6-9 along with zinc, B-complex, and a probiotic. I also learned that eczema is a condition that can be triggered by food allergies. I was advised to write down what foods I ate every day for months, to try to figure out that might be making my eczema worse. I came up with dairy, which I was having everyday with my coffee, and chocolate. So I cut those out of my diet and started taking the supplements on a daily basis.
About 2 months later, my eczema was totally gone. My skin was glowing from the therapeutic dose of omegas, and my hair was shiny, thick and healthy looking (a great added bonus). My energy level increased and I felt better than ever – like a new person. I started doing better in school, and my body was naturally dealing with stress better. I was also getting compliments about my skin and hair. I could not believe the power of supplements and eating right. When you identify a nutritional deficiency and work to address it, it can feel like a miracle.
After this experience, I became extremely interested in learning more about health and nutrition and decided to apply to work at Village Green. I learned so much from working there and interacting with such knowledgeable staff, that I decided to go on and earn a degree in public and community health, and ultimately became a Certified Nutrition Counselor. If I hadn’t had eczema, who knows? My life probably would have taken a completely different path.
