4 Supplements to Support a Healthy Microbiome
A few years back a study came out suggesting that parents should ease up on antibacterial soaps because germs can be beneficial. According to the lead author, Thomas McDade, "Contrary to assumptions related to earlier studies, our research suggests that ultra-clean, ultra-hygienic environments early in life may contribute to higher levels of inflammation as an adult, which in turn increases risks for a wide range of diseases." The message from the study was that it is important to be exposed early in life to common microbes and bacteria.
But then we entered a pandemic.
In the last year and half, we have been encouraged to use heavy disinfectants, hand sanitizers and frequent handwashing to avoid contracting the coronavirus. Unfortunately, with these routines to fight the spread of this virus, we may not have been doing our natural microbiome any favors.
The human microbiome is made up of trillions of cells, including bacteria, viruses and fungi that reside mostly in our gut, and it plays a big role in our immune health. What is ironic is that studies have shown that that weak gut health is connected to more severe COVID-19 outcomes.
Supporting Gut Health with Supplements
Since it looks like hand sanitizing and disinfectants are here to stay, there are some supplements that you can take to help support your gut health.
1. Probiotic supplements, which can help prevent infections and alleviate symptoms of GI upset.
2. Digestive enzymes, which can supplement the role of naturally-occurring enzymes to adequately break down foods and toxins in the body.
3. Comprehensive GI Support, to assist in repairing the lining of your gastrointestinal system.
4. Ion Biome Gut Health: Made from soil-derived carbon molecules (Terrahydrite®.), this product provides your body with a gut “stimulus.” ION*Gut Health was designed to support the body’s production of beneficial enzymes through redox signaling (cellular communication). It provides you with soil-derived compounds that have been clinically studied and proven to help improve gut health, mental clarity and immune function. It can help with nutrient absorption and reducing inflammation, while creating a healthy ecosystem for your microbiome to flourish. It may also help offset degeneration of the gut wall brought on by glyphosate and pesticides, which are found in much of the American food chain.
