4 Supplements for Women’s Health
Paula Gallagher on
I like to keep everything in my life simple, including what supplements I take. Aside from a multivitamin and an essential fatty acid (which almost everyone should take), there are a few more nutrients that are critical, especially for women. Many of these can be achieved through a healthy diet, but sometimes even that is not enough.
Here are some supplements that you might consider.
Iron
Iron deficiency can be very common in women of childbearing age, leading to fatigue. A simple supplemental iron can help to boost energy levels in women with low iron levels. You can ask your health care practitioner if you’d like to get your iron tested. If you decide to take supplemental iron, check for one that has vitamin C to help boost absorption.
Folic acid
According to NIH, almost 22% of American women of childbearing age aren’t getting the folic acid they need to prevent birth defects. It’s very important for women who wish to conceive to ensure they’re consuming enough folic acid.
Bone-building vitamins and minerals
During their lifetimes, at least one in three American women will suffer a fracture from osteoporosis. Good nutrition can help, but calcium alone isn’t going to do the trick. Minerals like magnesium, boron, zinc and copper are just as important. Look for a bone supplement like Pathway Bone Guardian that supports bone health.
Vitamin D
Even though vitamin D is certainly helpful for bones, it deserves a section all to its own. Recent research also suggests that vitamin D is associated with a reduced risk of developing breast cancer, as well as other types of cancers. Experts agree that it can be nearly impossible to get enough from our diets and sunlight - especially during the North American winters - so supplements can be helpful.
Before you take any of these supplements, consult with a health care professional to see if these are right for you.
