Why You Should Stop Drinking Colas
Posted on by Paula Gallagher
Are you a soda drinker? Well, maybe you should think again…
Coca Cola and Pepsi use a chemical called 4-methylimidazole in their colas to give them their brown color. 4-methylimidazole is a known carcinogen and California law mandates that a cancer warning label be applied to any product that contains this chemical at certain levels.
Both soda companies have recently changed their ingredients to avoid the warning label in California and plan to do the same for the rest of the country... eventually.
But if the possibility of ingesting cancer causing chemicals isn’t enough to stop you from drinking the sugary brown stuff, here are a few other reasons to cut back.
1. Weight gain: An average can of soda adds on 160 totally empty calories. If you think choosing diet sodas avoids this, think again. Studies show that people who drink diet sodas tend to make up the calories elsewhere and therefore have a more difficult time losing weight.
2. Stains teeth. Not only will sodas turn your teeth an unappealing yellow, but they also corrode the enamel faster than coffee, tea and juice.
3. Dehydration: Many sodas are caffeinated and act as diuretics, which can leave you feeling parched. If you are thirsty, you're better off reaching for water.
