Washington Capitals Use Micronutrient Testing to Improve Performance
Paula Gallagher on
Even if you aren't a hockey fan (how could you not be?), you might still know that the Washington Capitals are at the top of their division and are leading the National Hockey League in points.
They have great players, coaching and development, but Coach Barry Trotz also sees the value of using sport-science as an advantage. When one player was feeling run down, he had a blood analysis done and made adjustments to his diet. When his performance improved based on the results from the blood work, all the Capitals players were asked to do the testing.
Along with a micronutrient test, which reveals vitamin and mineral deficiencies, hormone and adrenal testing where also done. Personalized recommendations were made for each player based on the results. The reasoning for the testing is that stabilized micronutrient and hormonal levels could help the Capitals players recover better after games during a lengthy season and potentially prevent injuries. If a player is low in B vitamins and magnesium, for instance, it may take him longer to recover from a game or an injury which has a negative impact on performance. The organization's goal is to get ahead of deficiencies and improve performance, and continue their winning streak!
You don't have to be an NHL player to have micronutrient testing. Even with the best diet, you may be deficient in certain nutrients and not even know it. Nutrient deficiencies can result from various health conditions, stress, intense physical exercise, and medications. Research has shown that nutrient deficiencies can suppress the function of the immune system and contribute to degenerative processes such as arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
At Village Green Apothecary, we offer Micronutrient Testing through SpectraCell. SpectraCell measures nutrient status over the last 4-8 months by using the patient's own lymphocytes (white blood cells) to measure the biochemical function of important nutrients. This test is able to determine the amounts needed to replenish specific nutrients and provides patients with individualized plans specific to their unique vitamin or mineral requirements.
Correcting nutrient deficiencies is critical to promoting strong immune function and optimal health. To learn more about SpectraCell Micronutrient Testing, click here.
