This Might Be Sabotaging Your Weight Loss Success
Debi Silber, The Mojo Coach on
If you’re struggling with your weight, there may be a benefit from keeping that weight... on. What? I know right now you’re thinking; “That’s crazy Debi, why on earth would I want to do that?” Before you disregard the idea completely, consider this.
There may be a benefit from keeping that weight right there, and figuring out what the “benefit” is for keeping it there is the first step to doing anything about it.
So many of my clients over the years just couldn’t figure out why they kept sabotaging their weight loss success. Diet after diet and expert after expert, they were given a “meal plan” or strategies to avoid eating... which had NOTHING to do with the real issue. They were left overweight, frustrated and discouraged. They thought there was something wrong with their thyroid or their metabolism. They blamed it on heredity or resigned themselves to accepting that no matter what they tried, nothing would ever work... until they were willing to uncover the real issue that was keeping the weight there.
Of course, you could be eating foods that are triggering weight gain and weight storage, your hormones could be contributing to excess weight, etc. But, if that’s not the case, here are a few powerful reasons why the weight won’t budge:
• Sometimes it’s to avoid “rocking the boat” within a relationship.
• For some, the weight can act as a passive/aggressive way to get back at a partner.
• For others, it’s a way to avoid being physically attractive to someone else because of a painful past.
• For some, it’s a food addiction that has so much power, it held them hostage for years.
• For others, it’s a way of avoiding something (like a decision, a realization or a consequence) you’d have to face if the weight were gone.
Those are all powerful reasons to keep us exactly where we are and while it may seem as if your best efforts just get derailed because of a “lack of willpower” or low motivation, it could very likely be a subconscious way to protect yourself.
So if that’s the case, what can you do?
First consider if there is something you don’t want to see, deal with or face. Look at it fully, giving yourself compassion for trying to find a way to protect yourself and keep yourself unconscious from it. Then, realize the price your paying for all of that “protection.” Is it worth it? Is it serving you? Is it taking you where you want to go or preventing you from moving forward?
Once you’ve figured out the payoff that belief has been giving you, decide if it’s worth changing. Sure, it may have served you on some level but there’s an amazing version of you that simply may be ready to let that all go. If so, find some support (of course I’m always here to help) and begin to shed the story... along with the weight. Just as when we’re young we may hide behind our mom’s legs for protection, as adults, the excess weight may be giving you that “protection” now. Yes, it’s been like a security blanket for a while, but your empowered, strong, resilient and magnificent self may not need that security anymore.
Just something to consider as you move towards the life you deserve.
Can you relate to this? We’d love to know, comment and share!
