The Synergistic Relationship of Vitamins D and K
In recent years, vitamin D has received a lot of attention for its important role in health and wellness. From bone support, cognitive function, inflammation support to immune system optimization, vitamin D is a vital player in many aspects of health. Low levels of vitamin D has been linked to autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive disorders, cancer, obesity and more. Data shows that most people are deficient in vitamin D. Fortunately, the majority of doctors are now routinely testing vitamin D status and advising supplementation.
Newer research is focusing on the synergistic relationship that vitamin D has with vitamin K2, another essential fat-soluble vitamin. While vitamin K1 has been best known for its role in blood clotting, we now know vitamin K2 is an important cofactor in a number of biochemical pathways. Structurally similar to vitamin D, vitamin K2 helps to support bone, cardiovascular, and immune health, too. Like vitamin D, it is also believed that a lot of individuals do not have adequate amounts of vitamin K2, which can result in unfavorable outcomes for cardiovascular and bone health. However, screening for vitamin K levels is not as straightforward as testing for vitamin D.
Studies show that as vitamin D levels are increased, one's need for vitamin K is also increased. Researchers have also discovered that taking a combination of these vitamins is more protective than taking either vitamin alone. Based on this clinical research as well as our commitment to continually provide customers with high quality, therapeutic products, we now offer a Vitamin D3 + K2 formula in our Pathway line. This supplement features the most bio-available and bio-active forms of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and K2 (menaquinone-7). Each vegetarian capsule provides 2,500 IU of vitamin D3 and 45 mcg of vitamin K2, allowing for optimal dosing based on your specific needs.
Synergistic benefits of vitamin D3 and K2 include:
Bone Health
Vitamins D and K have been shown to support bone mineralization and lower fracture risk. In terms of calcium metabolism, studies have found that when vitamin D levels are raised via supplementation without sufficient vitamin K levels, there is an increased risk of calcium deposition in soft tissue (such as arteries and joints), as well as a negative effect on blood vessel elasticity. However, when adequate levels of vitamin K are present along with vitamin D, calcium can be properly directed to the necessary areas of the body (such as bones and teeth).
Vitamin D3 increases intestinal calcium absorption and vitamin K2 is essential for binding newly absorbed calcium to the mineral matrix in bone. For anyone taking a calcium supplement, taking a formula of vitamin D and K is especially important.
Cardiovascular Health
The mechanism of the action of vitamins D3 and K2 not only enhances bone strength and structure, but also helps to improve cardiovascular health by removing excess calcium from the bloodstream, limiting the chance of arteriosclerosis. Vitamin K2 provides critical cardiovascular protection by helping to activate matrix GLA protein (MGP), an inhibitor of vascular calcification. In addition, studies show that vitamins D and K have anti-inflammatory properties and also play a role in improving insulin sensitivity.
Immune Health
Individuals with higher levels of vitamins D and K have been shown to exhibit stronger immune function as well as a more balanced inflammatory response.
Please note: For individuals on blood thinners or other medications, please consult your doctor prior to increasing levels of vitamin K, in order to reduce the chance of any adverse effects.
