Lower Blood Pressure Naturally
Paula Gallagher on
"I have high blood pressure, what can I do to lower it?" This is one of the most common questions I am asked. Whether it's linked to stress (and who isn't stressed), or diet, or even if it's because of Grandma Lucy and your genes, there are many things that you can do to support your heart and keep your blood pressure in check. If you are looking for ways to lower blood pressure naturally, please read on.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), normal blood pressure is anything under 140 over 90. However, the OPTIMAL blood pressure is 120 over 80. Elevated blood pressure poses a major risk for heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. Lifestyle and dietary factors play a significant role in the regulation of blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure can be affected by numerous contributing factors such as coffee and alcohol consumption, smoking, stress, lack of exercise (as well as obesity), a high sodium-to-potassium ratio, low fiber, high sugar, high saturated fat and/or low essential fatty acid intake, and a diet low in calcium, magnesium, and/or vitamin C. Fortunately, regular exercise, relaxation techniques, improved nutrition, and increased consumption of plant-based foods such as celery, garlic, onions, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, cold-water fish (salmon and mackerel, etc.), plus whole grains and legumes, all positively affect blood pressure levels.
Two of my favorite supplements for heart health are Pathway Blood Pressure Support and Metagenics Super Garlic 6000.
There are many nutrients that have been found to encourage healthy blood pressure levels. Pathway Blood Pressure Support combines many of these important herbs, vitamins, and minerals into one great formula. Herbs such as coleus forskohlii and hawthorn are included in this formula for their ability to support healthy circulation. Magnesium and hops are added to aid in the relaxation of the central nervous system. In addition, taurine supports the central nervous system and is thought to be helpful in dealing with anxiety.
Garlic has a long history of use as both a food and medicine throughout the world. It exhibits many heart healthy properties and has been the subject of much scientific research. Studies support garlic as an effective agent in lowering blood pressure and improving circulation. Metagenics Super Garlic 6000 has 6000mcg of allicin, the active ingredient that is responsible for supporting cardiovascular and immune system health, as well as supporting healthy triglycerides and other blood lipids. An enteric coating is applied to each tablet in order to prevent odor, which is an important factor. I love garlic, but who wants to go around smelling like it!
