5 Best Summer Food Blogs
Paula Gallagher on
Here are some blogs about food and summer (two of my favorite things). Summer food blogs offer a great reminder about how bountiful and varied summer eating can be!
1.Guest Blog by Dr. Mark Hyman: 10 Reasons Why Summer is THE Season for Eating Well – There are so many reasons why I love the summertime: the green grass and warm sunshine, longer days and warmer evenings, more time to savor all the beauty of the outdoors. But the best part by far is the amazing abundance of healthy, fresh, whole foods everywhere you look. In celebration of the richness of the season, I’ve put together my top 10 reasons why there’s no better time to eat well.
2. Dinner Tonight: Summer Zucchini Pasta and Pesto – This delicious recipe combines raw zucchini and pesto made with pumpkin seeds, basil, garlic and lemon juice for the perfect light dinner on a hot day. Vegan and gluten free, too!
3. Lentil Quinoa Burgers with Hemp Pesto – It’s grilling season, and if you are a vegetarian, hamburgers aren’t high on your list for a fun summer meal. A great alternative is this recipe, which is chock-full of protein, fiber and omega-3's. The fiber will keep you feeling full, and the protein in the lentils will help balance your blood sugar. Hempseeds are a great source of omega-3's, which provide cardiovascular benefit. Hempseeds can be found at any health food store and add a nutty flavor to the burger. I made extra pesto and found that it was tasty on a variety of sandwiches. You can also freeze it for future use.
Quinoa is an ancient, gluten-free grain that contains all of the amino acids, so it is one of the few non-animal proteins that is an actual complete protein. Quinoa is light, tasty, and easy to digest. It is not sticky or heavy like most other grains, and it has a delicious flavor all on its own.
Even meat eaters will love this delicious burger!
4. 5 Tips for Safer Barbequing – Great tips on how to make grilling a safe cooking method this summer.
5. I Love Summer Tomatoes – Is there anything better than a warm tomato picked from your garden? These little red fruits are nutrition powerhouses and summer is the perfect time to enjoy them.
Is there anything better than a warm tomato picked from your garden? Okay, maybe there are a few things, but when you are biting into this ripe red fruit, it's hard to think of what they may be. I know that not everyone is lucky enough to have tomatoes growing in their backyards, but your local farmers’ markets are brimming with them, so there is no excuse not to enjoy locally grown tomatoes.
Tomatoes aren't only DELICIOUS! They are also chock-full of healthy nutrients. Starting with the basics, tomatoes contain large amounts of vitamin C, providing 40% of the daily value (DV). They also contain 15% DV of vitamin A, 8% DV of potassium, and 7% of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of iron for women and 10% RDA for men. Not bad for this little red guy, eh?
