Eat Your Sea Greens
We all know the benefits of eating spinach, broccoli, cabbage and kale, but there are different kinds of greens that also offer amazing nutritional value, as well as many potential health benefits. Sea greens – like spirulina, chlorella and kelp – have vitamins, minerals and amino acids, as well as antioxidant properties. People who take greens on a regular basis report that they have more energy and vitality.
But how do you pick the best one for you? Well, many formulas contain a combination of these greens along with barley and alfalfa powders to maximize nutritional content. But if you want to try only one, here are descriptions of some of the specific "sea greens" and their benefits.
Sea Greens
Spirulina
This nutrient-dense superfood contains all nine essential amino acids, important to help build and maintain the body's proteins. It also contains more vitamin A than carrots, more iron than beef, is a profound source of protective phytochemicals, is naturally low in fat, a source of the essential fatty acid GLA, and it is easy to digest.
Chlorella
Some consider it a complete food, containing protein, carbs, all the B vitamins, vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, minerals and trace minerals. This is a great choice for vegetarians because it contains vitamin B-12. Chlorella also contains chlorophyll (the green pigment), which seems to speed the detoxification of toxins from the bloodstream. Some have used it as a way to help remove heavy metals from the system.
Kelp
This edible seaweed contains all the B vitamins, and both macro and trace minerals. One of the main reasons for taking kelp is that it contains iodine, a component of thyroid hormone. Its mineral content also supports the brain, nerves, blood vessels, hair, skin and nails. Some practitioners also believe that it can protect the body against damage due to radiation (sun and cancer therapy).
Nori
Probably the most widely recognized sea vegetable, nori is the green “paper” that holds sushi bundles. Nori is technically classified as a red algae and offers an impressive array of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, and E, plus calcium, potassium and zinc.
