Are You Hanging Onto Your “Fat Clothes”?
Debi Silber, The Mojo Coach on
Are your hanging onto your “fat clothes?”
Let’s say you lost some weight, and let’s say you’ve done this in the past where you’ve lost and then you’ve gained it back, lost and gained, lost and gained, etc. You have a variety of sizes to choose from in your closet, that you go to depending on where you are on your journey towards finding a healthy and comfortable weight.
While it’s not making you happy, this yo-yo cycling may be something that’s become unfortunately... very familiar.
Now let’s imagine that, as it’s happened before, life throws you a curveball and you let go of some of your new healthy habits. You notice that the weight starts to creep back up again. Sure, you’re not happy with the weight gain, but there’s a slight sense of relief because while the size you’ve been wearing is too tight, you know that when the weight creeps up, no worries, you have that bigger size in your closet to go back to for just this reason.
If you’ve lost weight, think about why you still have the old “fat clothes” in your closet. Is it because you really hadn’t thought about it, you’re not sure what to do with the clothes or could it be this. Is there a chance that maybe you don’t trust the idea that you’re truly on your way to a healthy, fit body in a size you’re able to achieve... and maintain?
Here’s what I’d invite you to consider. Right when you’re finished reading this, go into your closet and get rid of your fat clothes. Usually, it’s not a great idea to burn bridges, but here’s where it IS a good idea. Why?
Hanging onto those fat clothes gives you subtle permission to get back into them. Even if it’s not conscious, subconsciously, you’re giving yourself that out. You’re giving yourself that leeway.
Here’s why it may benefit you to burn that bridge.
When those clothes are no longer available and when you’re reaching for that extra serving or you’re grabbing things that you know are going to put weight on, you may just reconsider because you have no alternative. You have no choice but make the adjustments you need to make your healthy eating a priority in order to fit into your clothes.
Will it keep you more accountable and more aware of the choices you’re making throughout the day? I can share that personally, this one simple strategy has helped me for decades.
This is a small strategy that I recommend to all of my clients as well, and it’s worked beautifully for them. When they gain a few pounds, they know they need to get things in check because they only have one wardrobe in one size to choose from.
So what do I suggest if you’re at your healthy and comfortable weight? Burn that bridge. Get rid of those bigger sizes along with the negative associations you may have with them. Donate them. Toss them. If you want to buy a smaller size, great; but don’t keep around the clothes that give you that opportunity and permission to grow back into your old size. Trust yourself that you’ve outgrown them physically as well as mentally and emotionally... and let go of the option.
You’ll be amazed at how when you’ve left yourself without the option and permission to find some “backup clothes,” you’ll keep yourself so much more in check and so much more in line.
Have you gotten rid of your “fat clothes” and has the strategy worked for you? Is it time to give it a try? I’d love to know, comment and share!
