10 Reasons You Should Start the Day Outside
Going outside for the first 15 minutes of the day can have numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits. Before you pick up your phone, take some time to venture outdoors. This is the first thing I do every morning, thanks to my dog, Daisy. We take a 15- to 30-minute stroll every morning, no matter the weather, and it makes such a positive impact on the rest of the day.
Here are 10 reasons why you should make this a part of your morning routine:
- Natural light exposure: Exposure to natural light in the morning helps regulate your body's internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. This exposure signals your brain to produce less melatonin (the sleep hormone) and more serotonin (the mood-boosting hormone), helping you feel more alert, awake, and ready to start the day.
- Vitamin D production: Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, a crucial nutrient that supports bone health, immune function, and overall well-being. Spending a few minutes outside can help your skin produce vitamin D, especially in regions with sufficient sunlight.
- Improved mood: Being outdoors, surrounded by nature, can have a positive impact on your mood and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. It allows you to connect with the environment, promoting a sense of calm and well-being.
- Increased energy: Exposure to natural light and fresh air can boost your energy levels and reduce feelings of fatigue. It's a great way to kickstart your day with vitality and enthusiasm.
- Mental clarity: Taking a few moments outside in the morning can help clear your mind and improve focus and concentration. It sets a positive tone for the rest of the day and enhances productivity.
- Physical activity: Going outside can encourage you to engage in light physical activities, such as walking, stretching, or yoga, which can be beneficial for your body and overall health.
- Connection with nature: Spending time outdoors fosters a sense of connection with nature, promoting feelings of gratitude and a greater appreciation for the world around us.
- Fresh air and oxygen intake: The air outside is typically fresher and contains more oxygen than indoor air. Deep breaths of fresh air can oxygenate your body and invigorate your lungs.
- Inspiration and creativity: Being in nature can stimulate creativity and provide inspiration. Whether you're an artist, writer, or someone seeking fresh ideas, the natural environment can be a great muse.
- Mindfulness and grounding: Taking a few moments outside allows you to practice mindfulness and be present in the moment. The grounding effect of connecting with the earth can help reduce stress and promote a sense of peace.
Incorporating a short outdoor time in the morning can be as simple as stepping outside onto your porch or balcony, going for a walk in a nearby park, or spending time in your garden. Embrace this practice to start your day on a positive note and reap the many benefits of spending time in nature.
