Your Emotional Strength and Resilience
Debi Silber, The Mojo Coach on
Never give up. Ever. The road to mediocrity is a crowded one. It’s so easy to give up and that’s why so many people do.
Over the past few weeks the topics of persistence, dedication, emotional strength and resilience kept coming up with my clients. So many obstacles kept presenting themselves and my clients find they’re playing one big game of “whack-a-mole” where they overcome one obstacle only for another to show up. While it’s so easy to look at it and say “why me,” I see it from a different viewpoint.
Did you ever think that obstacles may be presenting themselves to give you an opportunity to grow?
Think about it, we don’t grow from the easy stuff, we grow from the challenges. We grow from the desire for more, for something better, and when something encourages us to stretch. We grow from what may look like failure, which may just be a huge learning opportunity to see what we’re made of.
I love this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, which goes something like this: “A woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong it is until it's in hot water.”
Isn’t that the truth?!
Of course it’s so easy to give up, give in and go back to what’s old and familiar... even if it stinks. But, regrets stink too and if you ask me, they’re even worse. If an idea and a desire for something presented itself to you in a moment of inspiration, it’s because it’s what you are uniquely meant to do. Now, it doesn’t mean you have to do it, but if that desire is there, it’s there for a reason. Personally, when I feel one of those “shots of inspiration” and then think, “It’ll be too hard, take too long, I’m not smart enough, I’m too old...” and all the other things we say to talk ourselves out of something, here are two visuals I use that may help you.
First, I picture that idea floating in the universe, meant for me, but since I didn’t take it, someone else sees it and grabs it and makes it a huge success... all because I didn’t follow through with it.
If that’s not enough to fire me up, I picture sitting my four kids down, telling them about my inspiration, dream and vision and then saying, “Yeah but it was just too hard so, whatever, I gave up.”
Really? (Ugh!)
Keep your vision in mind and keep picking yourself back up, no matter how many times you need to.
The only failure is when you stop trying. Remember, it took Thomas Edison nearly 2,000 tries to create the light bulb!
Have you passed on an idea and wish you didn’t? Have you taken that bolt of inspiration and done something with it?
We’d love to know, comment and share!
