New Study: Multivitamin Improves Memory
A new study has shown that taking a daily multivitamin may improve memory. A group of researchers looked at the potential impact of a daily multivitamin on cognitive aging and memory. Over the course of 3 years, they monitored approximately 3,500 elderly individuals. One group received a placebo, while another group received a daily multivitamin. The participants also took tests, administered online, to evaluate memory.
At the end of the first year, people taking a multivitamin showed improvements in the ability to recall words. People taking the multivitamin were able to recall about a quarter more words. The researchers found that “effect of the multivitamin intervention improved memory performance above placebo by the equivalent of 3.1 years of age-related memory change."
It is important to note that although this research is exciting, a multivitamin should only be an adjunct to good diet, good sleep hygiene and overall healthy lifestyle habits.
