Red Wine for Slim Waistline
Paula Gallagher on
My parents are European, and as far as I can remember red wine has been at the table with meals. In fact, my father makes his own wine every September from scratch. Picks his grapes, squishes them in his garage and presses that yummy juice into barrels where it ferments for months before being bottled and consumed. My husband has also gotten into it and for the last 3 years has made merlot, cabernet and this year a red zinfandel. Needless, to say, we enjoy a glass of wine with our dinner or at the end of the day. I am a firm believer that there are many benefits in wine, and have written about them in a previous blog, but a new study published in the March issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine has given me yet another reason to enjoy it. According to researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, light to moderate alcohol consumption, most notably red wine, is not only good for a woman's heart, it may also help her keep her weight in check.
WHAT? Did I read that correctly? Apparently, over time, women who drank alcohol in moderation put on less weight overall and were less apt to become overweight compared to non-drinkers. This association was true, even after accounting for various lifestyle and dietary factors that might influence a woman's weight. Although they aren't exactly certain of the reasons, one theory is that woman who drank more alcohol, also tended to eat less, particularly carbohydrates. Keep in minds that drinking alcohol in excess can increase your blood pressure and contribute to the development of heart disease and stroke and weight gain. You really should keep it down to one or two drinks per day.
And for you non red wine drinkers, although red wine seemed best at keeping weight in check, white wine, beer and spirits also had some benefit.
